Gum disease, or periodontal disease, can affect people of all ages, but with early diagnosis and the right care it may be reversed. Our dentists provide preventative advice and treatment for gum disease.
When plaque is left to build up on the teeth, it forms tartar (also called calculus). Tartar attracts the bacteria that cause gum diseases like gingivitis (inflamed gums) that can lead to more serious cases of gum disease like periodontitis. Periodontitis involves the loss of the bone around the teeth and lead to tooth loss.
While gum disease can often be painful, you may not experience any discomfort at all. Only your dentist can properly identify the signs of gum disease, so having regular check-ups is essential to monitor your gum health.
If we finds signs of gum disease in your mouth, they may recommend or perform one of the following treatments:
Depending on the severity of disease, your dentist may also recommend adjunctive treatments including antibacterial mouthwash, antibiotics, and replacement of any fillings, crowns or other restorations that might be trapping plaque.
Periodontal surgery and a referral to a gum disease specialist may be required if the severity of the disease is too great or unresponsive to the treatment provided.
Your dentist will discuss with you the best solution to keep or restore your gum health.
Let them know if you are taking any medications or undergoing specialist treatment, or if you have experienced recent changes in your gums.
